Babylon: HellCHAPTER THREE HELL
Stretching for as far as the eye could see (or at least as far as the shaking beam of the flashlight could penetrate) were the walls of an atrocious cave, a vast cavern of wet, cinnabar-colored flesh pulsing in and out like the interior of some terrible creature's still-beating heart. Slime and sludge oozed down the undulating walls, thick heliotrope globs of mucus and puss that smelled worse than a decaying corpse and dripped down over my head in stinking clods of accumulated filth. Beneath me, the ordinary hardwood floor had vanished, replaced by a rubbery leather hide spotte Babylon: Hell

“Johnny!” Cynthia called up from the kitchen downstairs. “Johnny! Hurry up! We're not gonna wait all night!” “I'm coming!” I shouted back over my shoulder in the direction of my bedroom door. I went back to combing my hair, parting it to the right so that it fell in one smooth swoop over my forehead. The only light in the room came from a set of open windows on the south wall, the faint rays of light from the street lamp outside giving my dark brown hair a glossy ring around the crown of my head.
